Electronic Thermostat for Trace Heating on Offshore Oil Platforms
04/14/2026

In extreme industrial environments such as offshore oil drilling platforms, electronic thermostats play a critical role in trace heating systems that prevent freezing and ensure process reliability. Learn how Barksdale’s custom electronic thermostat solution delivers continuous temperature monitoring, enhanced safety, and energy‑efficient freeze protection in harsh condition

Electrical Trace Heating Systems for Demanding Applications

Electrical trace heating systems play a crucial role in protecting goods and maintaining process reliability across industrial, residential, and commercial applications. Wherever equipment must be protected from freezing—or where the free flow of liquids is essential—trace heating ensures that critical operations remain uninterrupted.

Barksdale’s trace heating control solutions are designed to keep pipes and tanks from bursting, support smooth plant operations, and help protect human health and safety while safeguarding the environment. Through continuous monitoring of operational parameters, these systems also maximize productivity and optimize energy efficiency.

One recent success story highlights how Barksdale’s collaborative engineering approach, advanced control technology, and certified safety solutions delivered exceptional value in one of the world’s most challenging environments.

The Application: Critical Temperature Management in Extreme Environments

In high-stakes industrial operations—such as offshore oil drilling platforms in Norway—reliable temperature control is vital. Extreme cold conditions can cause lubricants to thicken, liquids to stop flowing, and equipment to fail, leading to costly downtime and safety risks.

To address this challenge, Barksdale collaborated closely with a key customer to develop a custom electronic thermostat system as part of a comprehensive trace heating control solution. The system is used to monitor the temperature of lubricating grease on drill pipes, ensuring proper viscosity and smooth operation even in sub-zero conditions.

These trace heating control systems:

  • Prevent pipes and tanks from freezing or bursting
  • Ensure continuous process reliability in harsh environments
  • Protect personnel, equipment, and the surrounding environment

Both controllers and limiters are deployed to provide layered protection and fail-safe operation. The system supports multiple configurations, including variants with Bluetooth, Modbus, and alarm relays, enabling flexible integration and real-time monitoring of all critical parameters.

Shown in the photo is an ATEX-certified version with an integrated Bluetooth module, specifically designed for use in hazardous areas on offshore oil platforms.

Collaborative Innovation: Developed Together with the Customer

A key factor in this project’s success was Barksdale’s strength in custom electronic thermostat design. Rather than delivering an off‑the‑shelf solution, Barksdale worked closely with the customer to engineer a trace heating thermostat tailored to specific application, environmental, and regulatory requirements. The ability to customize the solution was critical to meeting the specific operational and regulatory demands of offshore oil and gas production. By aligning engineering expertise directly with customer requirements, Barksdale delivered a solution that not only solved the immediate challenge but also provided a scalable platform for future applications.

Why We Won: The Barksdale Advantage

Barksdale secured this significant project (totaling over 3,500 units and €450,000 in early 2026) by displacing competitors like JUMO through three primary strengths:

  1. Collaborative Engineering & Customization: Unlike off-the-shelf alternatives, Barksdale worked directly with the customer to co-develop a specialized electronic thermostat that meets exact process requirements, including specific variants for diverse communication protocols like Bluetooth and Modbus.
  2. ATEX-Certified Safety for Harsh Zones: Our ability to provide ATEX-certified versions was critical for deployment in hazardous offshore oil and gas environments.

  3. High-Volume Reliability: The successful delivery and performance of thousands of units demonstrate Barksdale's capacity to handle large-scale, mission-critical infrastructure projects. Our dual-functionality (controllers and limiters) ensures a redundant safety layer that protects both human health and high-value assets from extreme temperature failure.
